Like Nothing Before  -  Culture Night Sligo Friday 25th September

This September The Model is organising several key events that take place for Sligo's inaugural Culture Night. Reverse Pedagogy is the main exhibition that opens in the Model Satellite. We are also delighted to be co-producing Gracelands this year- an outdoor festival in Dromahair on the Saturday 26th September.

Other events on the night include a surprise pop-up-gig by Beautiful Unit around Sligo town, young model short films at Wolf On Arm and the BIG Art Project on the hoarding of The Model at the Mall.

Reverse Pedagogy  -  Opens at The Model Satellite Friday 25th September 7pm

You may have already noticed the curtains going up on Castle Street at The Model Satellite. Thankfully it's not signaling an end to our offsite venue but is just some of the preparations for the arrival of artists for the Reverse Pedagogy residency.  A diverse group of artists will gather here in Sligo to produce artwork, to educate one another, and to collaborate generally in opposition to traditional art educational models.

Reverse Pedagogy evolved out of Canadian artist Paul Butler's organisation of collective "Collage Parties," where he, up to twenty other artists, and the general public produce artwork over a week-long collaborative gathering.  In a similar spirit, Reverse Pedagogy at Sligo will be packed with leisure and sports activities, socialisation, and the "general pursuit of anything but work in a quantifiable sense". The project, much of it in the form of an artist residency, involves arts practitioners from different backgrounds, working in different genres.

On Culture Night artists and public will be interacting together creatively at the Model Satellite.

New Spaces For Music

The Model will continue to experiment with New Spaces for Music this Autumn. Already lined up for October is the sublime Katie Kim, an intimate gig with Josh Ritter in Calry Church for Sligo Live and Beautiful Unit shall also return following their pop up gig at Culture Night for a full performance to brighten the October nights.

Seamus Nolan The Trades Club Revival

This project is already underway on Castle Street and will open with an exhibition of memorablia from the club's history. The project will see Nolan bring together and collaborate with past members and potential future members of the club and invite them to become involved in the organisation of the club's revival as a working institute.

Young Model

Throughout the summer young model have been quite busy preparing for The Interview project.  Over the next few weeks they will be continuing to interview some of the outstanding Irish artists whose work is represented in the Niland Collection. Interviews with artists as diverse as Nick Miller, Barrie Cooke, and Sean McSweeney will be hosted on The Model website as online research archive to be launched in early 2010.

The young model team will also be hitting Gracelands on Saturday 26th September to interview young Irish contemporary artists such as Mark Garry, Isabel Nolan, Sam Keogh and Bea McMahon.

Schools Programme

Calling all primary and secondary schools to get involved in an extravaganza of collage making. The exhibition Reverse Pedagogy involves the work of nine artists who have been invited to produce artwork over two weeks in September at The model Satellite. The materials are a photocopier, video, projectors, a turntable, a radio, chalk boards, magazines, stickers, glue, bicycles, social activities, local sports and much more. Join the fun and learn about what they got up to.
