Waterfront Gallery, Rosses Point, Co. Sligo
Opening Friday 26th March 2010 at 7.30pm

Former EU Commissioner Ray MacSharry will open a photographic and print exhibition at the Waterfront Gallery, Rosses Point, Co. Sligo at 7.30pm on Friday 26th March 2010.

The exhibition will feature the works of local photographer Ciarán McHugh and printmaker Emmett McGlinchey

Ciarán McHugh is from Ransboro, Co. Sligo and currently lives in Headford, Co. Galway. This exhibition in the Waterfront Gallery builds on the success of the first solo exhibition of his work in Coolera in October 2008.

Ciarán’s portfolio is inspired by the rugged and historic landscape of the west of Ireland, and he is best known for his wide-angle panoramic compositions, contemporary landscape images and atmospheric infrared photographs.

In particular he is motivated by the dramatic beauty of his home county of Sligo, the stunning scenery of which is the inspiration for his Panorama Collection. Photographs in this collection comprise several individual shots that have been stitched together to capture sweeping vistas in a single expansive photograph that showcases the vastness of our landscape.

Also on display is the Ireland's Abandoned Ruins collection of photographs. Ciarán describes these as “a series of hauntingly atmospheric photographs which focus on timeworn subjects from a bygone age which were once robust but are now in the process of being lost to the ages and reclaimed by nature.

“Much of the beauty of the west of Ireland’s landscape manifests itself in the abundant evidence of our vast and rich heritage. These historic footprints are the inspiration for my Ireland's Abandoned Ruins collection”.

Emmett McGlinchey was born in California and moved to Enniskerry when he was eight years old. Emmett studied at the Limerick School of Art and Design and Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design and Technology, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2005.

The previous year Emmett had been awarded the accolade Wicklow Artist of the Year by Wicklow County Council.

As a result of that award he had a critically acclaimed solo exhibition in the Wicklow County Buildings. In 2008 Emmett was selected as one of twelve short-listed finalists of the inaugural Luas Art Competition.

Inspired by such artists as Andy Warhol, Barbara Kruger, Peter Mars and M. C. Escher, Emmett has embraced the new digital visual age, but has cross-pollinated his digital style with a very traditional medium.

His artwork embodies a distinctive mix of new and old using digital manipulation of images, but printing them using the older technique of ‘silk screen’ printing. Also known as "silk screening" or "serigraphy", Emmett uses the technique after mixing and manipulating his images digitally, with the original photographs acting as a palette for the colour and substance that make up the final limited edition prints.

The result is an innovative blend of expression that enhances our perceptions of the world around us and draws the viewer beyond mere function to the aesthetics of familiar images, which make them instantly new.

Following its opening on Friday 26th March, the exhibition will run from Wednesday – Saturday from 12.00 to 9.00pm.
