Further Information
Monica Corish is a writer and an artist. Her first collection of poetry, Slow Mysteries, written with the support of Arts Council and Leitrim Arts Office writing bursaries, will be published in late 2011. Her memoir writing has featured on RTE’s Sunday Miscellany and on Lyric FM’s Quiet Quarter; and her first short story was published recently in The Stinging Fly. She has an MA in Development Studies and broad experience as an adult educator, both in Ireland and in Africa. She began facilitating creative writing workshops 10 years ago, and is trained as an AWA Writing Group Leader.

In AWA writing groups, everyone writes together in response to a prompt that is designed to set the ink and the imagination flowing.  Group members are then invited, if they wish, to read they have written.  The group responds to each other's work, focusing on what they what was strong in the writing. This way of working makes for a very safe and freeing writing environment, and works well both with experienced writers and with beginners, writers whose creative juices are flowing as well as those who are feeling “blocked”.

The group includes people who are completely new to writing as well as more established writers. Some members may be interested in publishing, others will simply want to meet once a week and write together in a supportive and encouraging environment. What they will have in common is an enthusiasm for writing, and for supporting each other's writing, within the guidelines provided by the group leader.
One participant of Monica's writing workshops said: “I have been in writing groups in the past that were not so expertly directed as this one, groups that drifted nowhere in particular, and I soon dropped out of them. I'll be staying with this writers' workshop”; and another participant, new to creative writing workshops, said "This made me write instead of thinking about writing”.
