SLIGO DRAMA CIRCLE TO STAGE YEATS MARATHON

Sligo Drama Circle is marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of W.B. Yeats by staging a “Yeats Marathon” on Yeats Day, Saturday June 13th. This will consist of a non-stop marathon reading of the entire canon of Yeats poems, 378 in all! It is estimated that this will take 12-14 hours to complete.

A team of readers is in place which will recite all of the poems in relay beginning with “The Song of the Happy Shepherd” from 1889 and finishing with “Cast a cold eye/On life, on death/Horseman pass by” from the final poem “Under Ben Bulben”.

“Although we cannot be fully sure, we believe that this has not been done before anywhere in the world”, a spokesperson for the Drama Circle said.

The event will take place in The Digital Hub in Stephen Street, home to OSD Digital Agency, which is supporting the venture. It is also hoped to stream the event live on the internet on the day to bring Yeats poetry to an international audience.

As part of this unique venture, fundraising for two local worthwhile charities, North West Hospice and Sligo Cancer Support Centre, is taking place. Both organisations rely heavily on donations to continue doing the great work that they do and Sligo Drama Circle is delighted that both organisations will benefit from this marathon poetry reading.

A page has been set up on the My Charity website and donations can be made to both charities by debit or credit card here: http://www.mycharity.ie/event/yeats_marathon/

You can also follow the event through the Sligo Drama Circle social media channels on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Sligo Drama Circle is excited about this, their first contribution, to a special year of W.B. Yeats.
