Tubbercurry Youth Theatre

Tubbercurry Youth Theatre are a group of young performers from the south Sligo area.

During the Summer of 2009, Tubbercurry, well known for its strong theatre and music tradition saw 19 young performers exhibit the skills learned over a week of intensive workshops with artists from the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company and Assault Events (Northern Ireland) and the Phoenix Players (Tubbercurry).

The project “On the Move” was predominately focused on movement “A key skill that is essential for any young performer to develop” said Kellie Hughes of the Blue Raincoat Theatre Company. TYT put on an exhilarating performance to a crowd of local, national and international musicians in Tubbercurry from the annual South Sligo Summer School. The show was first performed at the Cairde Festival as part of Park Fest 2009. It was noted as one of the “Highlights of Park Fest” where the TYT showcased co-ordination, energy, timing and fun in a 13 minute of pulsating, non-stoop routine. On the Move showcased the excellent and highly imaginative work created during the residency with thanks to the Arts Council’s Youth Ensembles Scheme, Sligo Arts Service Arts Grant and the County Sligo VEC.

Tubbercurry Youth Theatre are planning to undertake 3 projects per year and aim to perform in the Cairde Festival 2010.

Membership to the TYT is based upon active participation in training and development workshops as these are where the skills are learnt to carry out the performances for public showing. These workshops will be openly advertised in the Sligo Champion Newspaper – Tubbercurry Notes.

Taking over the theatre …

“In July 2008 Phoenix Players Theatre Group commissioned a short piece of theatre to open the All Ireland One Act Drama Festival. Through advertising in the local paper the introductory workshop brought together 17 young people which would ordinarily whittle down once the commitment involved has been highlighted. The follow on workshop brought on 26 extremely eager young actors with an infectious enthusiasm that couldn’t be ignored… This group became the Young Phoenix Players and the performance was for most, their first.” TYT The Movie
