UNDER THE FIRE
Sunday 6 September, 8pm
Virginia Henderson Lecture Theatre in St Angela’s College, Lough Gill, Sligo
The Carrowmore Players are staging a late late late Heritage Week event at Saint Angela’s College this year. It is happening a week after official Heritage Week. It consists of 4 talks on the theme of Music and the Megaliths. The event is called Under the Fire. It was inspired by two main threads; the much forgotten music of the Conlon Brothers of Cloonamahon - the 17th century composers and harpers have to their name among other great tunes, Fainne Geal an Laé, which was also used in On Raglan Road. The other idea was that recent research shows that the rising of the sun viewed from Listoghil, the central tomb in Carrowmore happens at a very special time, marking the start and the end of winter. The four talks concerning Music, Myths and the Megaliths will be punctuated in good old Gaelic style by live music. Three of Sligo’s finest musicians will perform: Laoise Kelly (harp), Jarlath McTernan (pipes and low whistle) and Michael Holmes (bouzouki and mandolin). The event takes place at the Virginia Henderson Lecture Theatre in St Angela’s College Lough Gill. Admission is free to the first 140 people to ring Carrowmore Visitors Centre (071 91 61534) and book their places in advance. Callers will be asked to leave a phone number.

INTRODUCING THE HELEN O'GRADY DRAMA ACADEMY
The Helen O'Grady Drama Academy was started in 1979 in Perth, Australia, by TV actress Helen O'Grady. The aim of the academy is, over time, to give children the ability to communicate effectively and with confidence. They also encourage attentive listening and help children to make new friends. Over the course of the last 30 years, the academy has become operational in 25 countries worldwide, and has been here in North West Ireland since 2006. They currently operate in locations throughout Donegal, Sligo, Leitrim, and from September 2009, we are extending our operation to Mayo. In June this year we had almost 200 children take part in our end of year productions. Our teachers undergo regular training in the Helen O'Grady Drama System. Our classes are fun and energetic and are available for the following age-groups: Lower Primary – 5 – 8 years / Upper Primary – 9 – 11 years / Youth Theatre – 12 – 17 years.
They will also be launching their new pre-school programme for 3 and 4 year olds, later this year. This will use story-telling, songs, creative movement and dramatic play to encourage language development at this early stage. The Academy is now taking bookings for its Sligo studio which reopens in September 2009. U2 AND IRELAND FUNDS TO FINANCE MUSIC SCHEME
Deadline: tendering process likely late 2009/early 2010
U2 and The Ireland Funds have announced that they will finance a scheme to offer children and young people in Ireland the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and/or avail of vocal tuition. U2 will provide €5m to ensure the national rollout of the instrumental and vocal tuition elements on a phased basis to 2015. The Ireland Funds will begin a campaign to raise a further €2m. Music Network, a non-profit music services organisation will administer the scheme, which will be introduced nationwide on a phased basis from 2010-2015. The scheme will be rolled out on a phased basis, in a number of new locations each year, beginning in 2010 and including all musical genres. Involvement in the scheme will be offered on the basis of competitive tender. Local interests (for example one or more local VECs and/or local authorities, local private music schools, parents groups etc.) will be invited to bid for a three-year subsidy to provide for the costs of teachers and local administration; they must show how they will generate matching resources locally, and how they will plan to make the scheme sustainable in the longer term. Music Network advises the development of local partnerships now in order to be ready for the tendering process which should happen in late 2009 or early 2010. Read more at www.musicnetwork.ie.

For this exhibition, Caitriona O’Leary employs tree and path motifs in forest-like settings as a vehicle to explore elements of chiaroscuro. Cormac O’Leary’s current work explores the coastline of the northwest, an area visited in all weathers, where nature survives against the odds. Castle Street, Sligo. www.thecatandthemoon.com

AIDAN CROTTY AT THE PAUL KANE GALLERY (DUBLIN)
Until Saturday 12 September. 6 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.
“Inert”, without the power to move, to resist motion, lifeless.
The settings within my paintings derive from rural environments that border town-land, river and sea. Within these confines I am drawn to solitary subjects that seem long detached from social function. In my current work it has become intrinsic to observe both from life and memory. – Aidan Crotty
RONNIE HUGHES AT GOETHE-INSITIUT (DUBLIN)
The Goethe-Institute Dublin is pleased to present Background Noise', an exhibition of new work by Ronnie Hughes. The exhibition of drawing, photography and sound pieces will be on show from 3 September to 17 October 2009.
The exhibition by Irish, Sligo based artist Ronnie Hughes is comprised of three elements; a large drawing on paper, a series of small black and white photographs and a sequence of six sourced sound pieces.
‘Background Noise’ continues Hughes’ interest in scientific theory from ancient Greek thought onwards: The work alludes to ideas developed by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the fields of evolutionary theory, plant morphology and colour theory while making nods to more current thought in cosmology and chaos theory.
The exhibition enables a generous situation where a series of exact and chaotic elements combine to reflect humanity's search for logic and its need for the poetic
'Background Noise' is curated by Mark Garry.
