1.  FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

REMINDER: ARTIST IN THE COMMUNITY GRANTS SCHEME 2009

Closing Date: Thursday 25 June 2009, 5pm.

Twice yearly, the Arts Council offers grants to enable artists and communities of place/or interest to work together on projects. The scheme is open to artists from any of the following artform disciplines: architecture, circus, street art and spectacle, dance, film, literature (Irish and English language), music, opera, theatre, visual arts and traditional arts. The Artist in the Community Scheme is managed by Create, the national development agency for collaborative arts. www.create-ireland.ie


THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION FOR IRELAND'S SMALL GRANTS SCHEME

Closing Date: 31 July, 2009

The Community Foundation makes grants to not-for-profit and voluntary groups working in communities throughout the Republic of Ireland. The Community Foundation will favour projects leading to the social inclusion of people and communities who are excluded by reason of geography, race, age, disability, family circumstances, poverty, gender or race. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis and assessed three times per year.  To submit your application please email it as an attachment to info@foundation.ie.

FILMBASE AND RTÉ TO HOST INFORMATION SESSION ON APPLYING FOR THE FILMBASE/RTÉ SHORT FILM AWARDS SCHEME

In advance of the next award deadline Filmbase and RTÉ will be hosting an information session for filmmakers intending to apply for the Filmbase/RTÉ Short Film Award scheme. The session will take place at Filmbase at 2pm on Thursday 11th of June and will last approximately one and a half hours. The session will consist of a panel presentation on the selection process by Filmbase MD Alan Fitzpatrick and Jo Schofield from the IPU at RTÉ. Also on the panel will be filmmaker Michael Lavelle who will talk about his experience of making his short film Out of the Blue through the scheme. The panel session will be followed by a brief Q&A session. The session is free but places must be booked by emailing Clare at Filmbase on clare@filmbase.ie. Please include 'Award info session' in the subject line and make sure to include your full name and (where applicable) the name of your production company. Following the successful launch of You Lucky Thing, a book of photographs, by artist Helen O’Leary, commissioned by Sligo Local Authorities and funded by the Per Cent for Art Scheme, the Arts Service is giving away free copies of the book.  Unfortunately we are unable to post out copies.  Please call to the office for your copy.  Alternatively copies will be available in Sligo Central Library in Stephen Street and we hope they will be available in bookshops over the summer.

NYCI’S CERTIFICATE IN YOUTH ARTS 2009/2010

Deadline for applications is 5pm Friday 10th July

The Certificate in Youth Arts is a part time, year-long university accredited course of study in Irish youth arts practice. Accrediting body: NUI Maynooth, Dept of Applied Social Studies. The Certificate in Youth Arts aims to introduce those working in the non-formal education sector to the concept, principles and practice of youth arts using a context and practice approach. NYCI’s Certificate in Youth Arts is the only course of its kind in Ireland. It provides opportunities to experience various art forms, learn from practitioners in the field, and to consider the values and methodologies underpinning arts practice with young people. North West Film School are holding a Filmmaking course in Sligo for teenagers aged 13-18. The course will teach students the basics of film production through classroom instruction, practical and technical workshops and immediate directing experience. Course duration and cost: Courses last for two weeks and run Monday-Friday, 10am until 4pm. Courses cost €220 per two-week session. AESTHETICA ANNUAL CREATIVE WORKS COMPETITION 2009

Closing date to receive Creative Works is 31 August 2009

Aesthetica is looking for entries to the 2009 International Aesthetica Creative Works Competition. The 2008 Competition was a successful springboard for artists’ careers around the globe. The winners and finalists from last year, went on to secure further exhibitions, commissions (including Channel 4’s Three Minute Wonder), and publications. The winners and finalists were published in the Aesthetica Annual, which is available nationwide through Borders Stores. It’s a great opportunity to bring your work to a wider audience.

The Aesthetica Creative Works Competition seeks entries of Artwork, Photography & Sculpture, Fiction and Poetry. Three winners will be awarded £500 each. All finalists will be published in the Aesthetica Creative Works Annual, in stores December 2009. Entry to the 2009 Aesthetica Creative Works Competition is £10. This allows you to submit up to 5 images, 5 poems or 2 short stories.

FAVOURITE SCENE VIDEO COMPETITION

Competition closes on 24th July 2009

Entertainment.ie have just launched a new competition on the site in conjunction with Filmbase - 'Favourite Scene Video Competition': www.entertainment.ie/favouritescene/. People of all ages can submit their take on their favourite scene from a movie. It can take on any form like animation, silent movie etc. The more imaginative the better! Anyone who wishes to enter can do so on Entertainment.ie by uploading their video or if they wish they can post in their scene on a DVD. 1st prize includes €1,000 worth of equipment rental, 2nd prize is a training course of his/her choice. 3rd prize is 1 year's Filmbase membership and 4th & 5th prize is 1 year's subscription to Film Ireland Magazine. This would be a great opportunity for both young and older people to get more involved in making short films and would be excellent experience for anyone aspiring to be the next JJ Abrams. Also, their work would be showcased on a national scale, everyone's dream!

CATHAL MCGINLEY WINS JOHN O’LEARY FINE ART GRADUATE AWARD

The presentation of the John O’Leary Fine Art Graduate Award which honours the late Sligo based artist and lecturer, John O’Leary, took place on Thursday evening, 4th June at the Art & Design Honours Degree Show in the Fine Art & Design Department, Institute of Technology, Sligo.

This award was introduced by Sligo County Council in the current Space for Art Sligo Arts Plan 2007-2012 and is delivered in partnership with the Fine Art Department, Institute of Technology Sligo and the Sligo Art Gallery, to recognise excellence in the visual arts at under-graduate level. The adjudication panel noted that the winning artist demonstrated a sense of finesse and fluency with high artistic sensibility. They continued to say that the artist made a clear and informed point of connect with Sligo Art Gallery and his proposal echoes the artist’s discipline and ambitions. DERVISH, SEAMIE O'DOWD & ITCHY FEET DRUMMING BAND IN SPAIN

Sligo featured heavily at the Maremagnum Festival in Tomares, Seville, Spain last month as Sligo based promoters Itchy Feet www.itchyfeet.ie brought over Dervish, Seamie O'Dowd and The Itchy Feet Strawboy Drumming band. The Sligo musicians and performers were a huge hit with the Spanish audiences and also celebrated by performing with the Galician pipers of Seville. Paddy Killoran Traditional Music Festival
June 18 – 21, Ballymote, Co. Sligo

This festival commemorates the memory and musical legacy of Paddy Killoran and his contemporaries. Thursday night opens with a bilingual table quiz in John Doddy’s at 8.30pm. On Friday night, the official opening takes place in the Coach House Hotel at 8.30pm and music is by Ceoltóirí Oga Bhaile an Mhóta, Philip Doddy & PJ Hernon, Frank Mulcahy, Cian and Caoimhe Kearns, Damien Molloy, Dermot and Michael Hurley and brothers Des, Kevin and Andrew. Concert is being recorded for ‘Comhaltas Live’.

Saturday plays host to workshops in Loftus Hall and Abbey Pastoral Centre and a Ceili later that evening with the Annaly Ceili Band.  On Sunday there is music on the bandstand in Ballymote Town park (4pm) and workshops and singing sessions in Hayden’s from 5pm until the Slan Abhaile at 10pm.
