4. ARTS NEWS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
SLIGO LIV ARTS AND MUSIC FESTIVAL
Sligo Live is a national festival celebrating traditional, roots and acoustic music. Now in its fifth year, it has carved out a niche as one of the most relaxed, intimate and enjoyable music festivals in Ireland. Sligo Live is a modern continuation of a long and distinguished musical heritage going back hundreds and maybe thousands of years. It has been shown that the first inhabitants came to Sligo over five thousand years ago and who would bet that the incredible beauty of Sligo did not inspire them to sing, dance and play music! As another famous Sligo man, W.B.Yeats said in his poem: The Fiddler of Dooney 'The merry love to fiddle and the merry love to dance'.
This year highlights include Martha Wainwright, Imelda May, The Saw Doctors, Josh Ritter, Frankie Gavin, PJ Gallagher, Jinx Lennon & Paula Flynn, Tony De Marco, Chris Meehan and his Redneck Friends, Wallis Bird Band, Oisin and the Odd Socks Revival. CCE Sligo Town Branch is again joining with Sligo Live festival to host the Fiddler of Dooney Competition. The ever popular and atmospheric French Market is back again by popular demand and there will be street entertainment, cafe culture with performances in Sligo’s many coffee shops and food outlets. This year Sligo Live embraces the digital age by broadcasting some of the Festival’s top Trad Sessions live on the internet. Full available on www.sligolive.ie.
THE MODEL RECEIVES MAJOR FUNDING BOOST FOR REDEVELOPMENT
On 1 October 2009, The Model in Sligo announced that it has been awarded €2.4 million from the EU/Border Midlands Western Regional Assembly, providing a major boost to funding for its ambitious redevelopment programme. The BMW Fund is allocated from an advance payment of the EU Structural Funds to Ireland, representing a continuation of the Assemblyís commitment to the development of Sligo under the National Spatial Strategy framework and prioritised in the BMW Regional Operational Programme 2007-2013.
Construction on the redevelopment of the Model Arts and Niland Gallery stared in April this year and it is due for completion at the end of 2009, with the centre's re-opening scheduled for spring 2010. The project will see The Model expand in size by over a third in an attempt to realise its potential and consolidate its position as a flagship cultural centre in Ireland. The Future Model will deliver high-level incubation spaces for creative industries, a purpose built performance space and artists' studios. Meanwhile the existing building will house a new gallery and exhibition space, a restaurant and additional education spaces. The total estimated cost of the project comes in at €5 million.
Speaking on the announcement of the €2.4 million award, The Model's Director, Seamus Kealy, and Chair, Bernadette O'Shea, welcomed the allocation of funding to The Future Model and expressed their gratitude, describing the award as an investment in the economic, social and cultural development of Sligo. It is estimated the award will also contribute to the creation of an additional 23 construction jobs. www.modelart.ie/futuremodel.htm.

MICHAEL WANN AT THE SLIGO ART GALLERY
Gallery hours Monday to Saturday 10 - 5.30pm and admission is free.
Wann’s work is specifically drawing-based, and this current exhibition includes large-scale compositions completed while on residency at the Cill Rialaig Project, Co. Kerry, and the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Co. Mayo, during the summers of 2008 and 2009. The drawings are taken from the immediate locale of north Sligo, and juxtapose arbitrary or transient images of cleared landscape, with more thought provoking depictions of the dereliction of habitation. Within the chosen mediums of charcoal, water and pencil there exists a wide and versatile imperfection of process. www.sligoartgallery.com
BILLY MOORE AT THE CAT AND THE MOON GALLERY
Castle Street, Sligo. www.thecatandthemoon.com
This new work of ceramic, bronze and welded metal sculptures by Billy Moore furthers Moore’s ongoing interrogation into aspects of the notion of “journey” as a metaphor for life’s path, with direct reference to his own experience. Thus are the trials and/or triumphs of each day given visual expression, as Moore realises tactile -almost malleable- forms which belie the myth that metal and clay can be difficult or unyielding materials in the hands of the artist. Until 4 November. The Cat & the Moon Gallery also continues its new series of exhibitions entitled “Irish Vision”, which focus on the art of craft.
