Sligo is set to host its very first Design Week from October 31st to November 6th, with a programme of free events and design-led happenings taking place at venues and pop-up locations, as part of the year-long celebration of design in Ireland.

Irish Design 2015 is a year-long programme exploring, promoting and celebrating Irish Design in just about every form, and provided the funding for this year’s Sligo Design Week.

The inaugural design festival for Sligo includes an extensive line-up of speakers for a lunchtime Design Talks series at The Model arts centre, workshops exploring everything from Lino Cut and refashioning to networking events, design exhibitions including the highly acclaimed Fresh Talent exhibition, a special session on Creative Entrepreneurship, a family day of design at The Model, a live street art and music gig, and a Makers Day including a Pop up FabLab with 3D printing and laser cutting machines, as well as a special screening of 'Maker'.

“There is an exciting level of inspiring craft and design activity happening among emerging makers in Ireland today,” says Muireann Charleton, Education and Innovation Manager at DCCoI. “Sligo Design Week 2015 is giving these designer-makers the platform to showcase their creativity, and Future Makers Awards is delighted to be part of this innovative week that features so many talented Irish creatives.

“FABLAB Manorhamilton are very excited to be involved with the first ever Sligo Design Week. The idea behind the Maker Day and Pop Up Fab Lab at The Model is to show people that you don’t need to be a ‘designer' to make incredible things. The FabLab is here to help people turn their ideas into real objects using easy to learn digital technology,” said Stuart Lawn, co-founder of FabLab Manorhamilton, who will host a pop up workshop at The Model on Friday November 6th.

“ID2015 provided a funding call which we responded to, and received support for this year’s event; we are starting with a really strong yet compact programme, and hopefully the event will grow in to a yearly event for Sligo. This year is about introducing design as a conversation in Sligo, drawing the design community together and encouraging everyone to get involved in the event through a programme of 100% free events.”, concluded Denise Rushe, event coordinator of Sligo Design Week.

Highlights from the programme of free events in Sligo include:

Fresh Talent, an exhibition opening at The Model on Friday 30th October, shines a light on some of the most creative of the new wave of emerging Irish designers, who have made an impact within three years of graduating. One of the core exhibitions in the Irish Design 2015 touring programme, Fresh Talent highlights the calibre of Irish design across a broad range of disciplines and includes local designers Ashleigh Smith, Rebecca Marsden and Kevin Callaghan.

Family Day of Design: join Sligo fashion designers Anna Vahey (Ana Faye) and Rebecca Marsden for afternoon of design at The Model on Saturday 31st October.

Design Talks: a series of free lunchtime talks at The Model looking at themes of music, architecture, fashion, and graphic design with Jacob Stack, Anna Vahey, Ashleigh Smith, Jo Lewis and David Wall, from Tuesday 3rd – Friday 6th November.

Creative Entrepreneurship: A significant theme running through Sligo Design Week culminates in a two-hour session at IT Sligo bringing together leading local agencies, creative networks, student entrepreneurs and retail businesses to share information and supports on setting a creative enterprise in Sligo and the Northwest.

Made in Sligo Tour: Hop on the bus for a daytrip around Sligo and step inside the studios of Sligo’s leading craft and design makers on Sunday November 1st.

Workshops: From lino-cutting to refashioning, the pop up FabLab workshop with 3D and laser cutting machines, discover the world of design through practical, hands on workshops throughout the week.

Live Art & Beats: Belfast-based Sligo native street artist Friz, who’s large scale murals feature influences of Celtic mythology, strong female characters and nature, teams up with DJ Nooneboy for a night of Spray Paint and Beats at Swagman Bar on Tuesday November 3rd.

Sligo Design Week is proudly supported by Irish Design 2015 and Bank of Ireland.
