Culture Night Sligo returns Friday September 18th

It’s that time of the year again - enjoy a late night of free cultural events and happenings on Friday September 18th as Ireland celebrates Culture Night 2015 - the nationwide event when arts and cultural organisations open their doors late in to the evening. 

Culture Night is a hugely important event on the cultural calendar providing people with the opportunity to discover and enjoy the rich cultural offering of the country’s cultural venues at night.

Taking place on Friday 18th September, Culture Night Sligo see’s the county’s arts organisations opening their doors to all, with pop up shows, exhibitions, live theatre, creative workshops, family fun, and best of all – it’s all completely free! Suitable for ages, and all interests, this year’s Culture Night Sligo includes a multitude of cultural events from visual art to music, theatre, craft, spoken word, photography and much more.

Culture Night Sligo Highlights:

The Model, home of the Niland Collection, will be buzzing with activity throughout the day and night with cultural and creative happenings for all:

Artists Studios will open to the public –this is always a wonderful opportunity for members of the public to visit the studios of the artists who work everyday at The Model. Audiences can meet the artists, view their work and discuss their individual artistic practices.

Join musician Rossa O’Snodaigh for a rhythm workshop conducted through the medium of Irish will give children of all ages the opportunity to learn about over 16 unusual instruments from strings to percussion.                                                                                    

The Model Cinema will host a selection of wonderful Irish language films with themes ranging from love to comedy - for unique cinematic experience: Bígí linn!

 

For Visual Art fans, there will be interactive guided tours of The Model’s Niland Collection in both Irish and English, throughout the evening.

 

A very special sound art performance with Robert Jarvis, which will create a mesmerising sound map of the universe as viewed by our turning planet.

During a workshop with Robert Jarvis, participants will be encouraged to bring musical instruments so that they can create their own version of the aroundNorth sound art installation.

Enjoy a range of accessible workshops from Theatre, Music, Movement and more in free workshops with Branching Out, from 6 – 9pm.

Explore the world of sculpture through Workshops at the studio of with Lynda Gault, or discover how to make ceramic sculptures with Bettina Seitz.  - Children and adults are welcome to join Halloween themed workshops in the artists studio at The Factory.

Step inside the world of artists, illustrators and sculptors as they open up their studios to the public - The Model Artists studios will be open late, and Gary Reddin will showcase a specially selected collection of work for Culture Night.

The Hamilton Gallery will host an artist talk with local artists sharing their inspiration for their work and the technique.

From early jazz and afro-beat to experimental contemporary music, live DJ’s, visual projections and good vibes, Sweet Beat Café will host an early evening of music.

As part of Sligo’s first PARK(ing) Day, 15 on-street carparking spaces across town, from Temple St to The Mall will be transformed in to individual on-street carparking spaces into Mini Public Parks for all to enjoy.

Sligo's Masonic hall will be open for tours and a talk on the buildings history, with Spike Sligo presenting their new play ‘Hang Ups’ inside.

Sligo Youth Theatre present ‘Westlife, Emos, Yeats and other weird influences on my life', a refreshingly young and unique view of popular culture in the West of Ireland​

The Hawk’s Well Theatre have a busy programme for Culture Night including ‘Codladh Sámh’, a truly unforgettable traditional music experience for babies which celebrates forgotten lullabies of yesteryear.

Take a journey back in time to 1916 on Culture Night as part of “Sligo 1916...The Way We Were” - hear what life was like for Sligo people living in the busy port town. Help us create the story of our history by sharing your family stories of yesteryear.

Join the musical journey into our collective past for Revolutionary Strings - a newly commissioned piece of music for string quartet explores all that united the people of the 1916 Revolution: youth, radicalism, subversive activities, enthusiasm and love.

Theatre Artist in Residence Bob Kelly and the Hawk’s Well team will discuss plans for Sligo 1916 and would love to hear your family’s stories of Sligo history.

Renowned photo blogger Val Robus shares a very personal journey through the Wild Atlantic Way and surrounding areas that have inspired her and her camera lens for almost a decade at her exhibition Wild Atlantic Wayfarer.
