David Beattie - At a Slight Angle to the Universe

David Beattie’s sculptural works combine the use of sound, movement and physics to create unlikely alliances. For his exhibition At a Slight Angle to the Universe, the artist explores notions of elementary physics to illustrate the human desire to comprehend and question what surrounds us. Incorporating an array of found-objects and electrical devices, such as electric motors, metal tubes and computer fans, Beattie transforms these elements into unique arrangements and creations. His reapplication of domestic objects and technologies offer a fresh reading of their use and function and allow a reinterpretation of the specific identity and history of these redundant objects.

At a Slight Angle to the Universe is a result of work developed during The Fred Conlon Residency Award 2009. This award was established by Sligo Arts Service in partnership with the Conlon Family and the Leitrim Sculpture Centre to honour the late sculptor Fred Conlon, a native of west Sligo, to pay tribute to his contribution to the cultural life of the region. The artist would like to thank Sligo Arts Service, Leitrim Sculpture Centre and the Conlon Family for their generous support.

David Beattie graduated in 2006 with an MA in Visual Art Practices from Dun Laoghaire IADT and in 2001 received his BA from the National College of Art and Design, Dublin. He has received a number of awards including an Arts Council Artists Bursary in 2009. His recent solo exhibitions include: Remote Control, Butler Gallery, Kilkenny, 2009; Oonagh Young Gallery, Dublin 2009; Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, Co. Wicklow 2008; 2006; Selected group exhibitions include Miscellany, Outlet Gallery, Manchester, 2009; The Quiet Revolution as part of the Hayward Touring Programme, Milton Keynes Gallery, UK, 2009; Corpus Callosum, Studio 1.1, London 2009; Play, Draiocht Arts Centre, Blanchardstown, Dublin 2008. Upcoming solo exhibitions in 2010 include The Mercer Union Centre for Contemporary Visual Art, Toronto and The Mattress Factory Art Museum, Pittsburgh, USA.
