Steve Wickham was born in Dublin in 1960 and studied violin with Nell Kane at the Royal College of Music in Chatam Row. He moved to Sligo from Dublin in 1992. He lives in Calry.
As a violinist Steve has recorded on over a hundred albums with artists as diverse as Bob Dylan and Sinead O Connor to U2, Sharon Shannon, World Party and the Waterboys. Steve also plays guitar, piano, mandolin, banjo, concertina, didjeridoo, whistle, kalimba, occarina ,and saw. He enjoys arranging strings.
He is a member of the Waterboys since 1985 and has made six albums including ‘This is the Sea’, “Fisherman’s Blues’ and ‘Room to Roam’ and continues to record and tour extensively with them. In recent years Steve has been involved in various theatre projects.
In 1997 and 98/99 was commissioned by the Abbey Theatre to compose music for two Irish language plays by Tom McIntyre; Caoineadh Art O Laoghaire and The Midnight Court. Following on from working with Director/Writer Michael Harding in the Abbey, Steve composed music for for several of Michael Harding’s plays including ‘Sleeping a Lovesong’ and “Bogdances”.He also worked closely with the Sligo Youth theatre on “Their Stories”.
Steve has composed several film scores including a piece for award winning ‘ A Dublin Story ‘ directed by Graham Cantwell, ‘’Pokernight’, a Canadian short film and more recently a score for a film, as yet untitled, about the Spanish Armada disaster in Sligo.Steve plays with a string trio/quartet and composes and arranges music for the group. He also has an interest in Jazz and performs regularly around Sligo with a combo.
